Short History of Peter Brock
The name Peter Brock is synonymous with motorsport not just in
Australia but on a global scale. Autosport magazine (the bible of
motorsport) revealed "The 20 Most exciting Drivers - Ever" and Peter Brock
featured at number 14 alongside such people as Fangio, Senna, Moss and
Ascari. It was his humble modesty in accepting the honour that further
enhances his legendary appeal. Peter Brock had an extensive list of career highlights that are
unsurpassed both on and off the track. But it was the sheer charisma of
the man himself and his ability to meet any challenge with optimistic
enthusiasm that stood him apart from the
rest. “King of the Mountain” – 10
victories in the “Bathurst 1000” . More pole positions and more race
victories than any other driver since the inception of the Australian
Touring Car championship in 1960. In
his younger days Peter and his brother raced slotcars at a local
Melbourne Raceway, where he donated one of his earlier trophies which
is still used today. The first Peter Brock National was held at “Quikslot
Raceway” on January 27th 1974. In addition to the Trophy, a
prize of $600 made it the richest ever slot car race held in
Australia. Peter Brock was in
attendance to present the trophy. Brock
retired from full-time driving in 1997. He announced to a packed race
track he was forming 'The Peter Brock Foundation'. A philanthropic
organisation funded by corporate sponsors and donations from the public.
Aimed at disadvantaged youth and others experiencing difficulties in
Australia. The Foundation still continues operating and has financed many
activities and people. After his nominal 'retirement' he made two returns
to Bathurst (2002 and 2004) and competed in the Nations
Cup for
highly modified and exotic cars in 2004. In 2002, he returned to top-level
touring car racing as a team patron with Rod
Nash Racing in
V8
Supercar
Commodore in
that year's Bathurst
1000 and
the team was renamed 'Team Brock' as a branding
exercise. Tragically
Peter Brock died in Western Australia while driving in a Rally. Brocky was
competing on the second day of the Targa West Rally when his Daytona Coupe
hit a tree on a country road near the small community of Gidgegannup,
about 40 kilometres east of Perth.
He died at the scene aged 61. This
